Learn How To Cook Fava Beans

By Amy Richardson

Many people all around the world regularly include fava beans in their diet and they can be purchased in supermarkets and vegetable stores. Buying and preparing fresh food is always better than using canned foods and it can be cheaper. When you plan to use this type of food it is important that you know how to cook fava beans correctly.

Fresh produce such as the fava bean is high in protein and fiber as well as containing vitamin B. They taste very good when added to your hot dishes or when cold and added to a healthy salad. You can either use a dried variety or you may prefer to buy complete pods and shell them before cooking and eating.

Cooking produce and preparing it is a fairly simple process and you will not need any fancy kitchen equipment. A saucepan, colander and some utensils are needed along with some water and something to cook on. When you have prepared your produce you can cook it so that it can be eaten or frozen.

When you want to use dried fava you should soak them in cold water overnight to get them soft. When the beans have soaked they will expand because they will have taken on some of the cold water. The next step is to put the fava in a pan, cover with water and you can then bring the pan to the boil and cook for about four minutes.

The next step is to turn off the heat and leave the beans to soak in the hot water for approximately one hour. You should then be able to peel each bean before you return them to a pan and simmer in water for around 45 minutes. When the beans are cooked you can then drain them in a colander at which point they will be ready to serve.

If you have decided to use fresh produce there will be a different method to use. You will have to open the pods and take each bean out before placing them all in a bowl filled with iced water. You should then get a saucepan of boiling water and add the beans to it for half a minute so that they blanch and then they can go back in to ice cold water before they are carefully peeled by hand.

After peeling your favas they can be steamed so that they cook and you can then use them to create your dish of choice. Using the steaming technique to cook your food is healthy and it means that less nutrients are lost in the cooking process. If you do not want to eat the beans immediately you should store them in a sealed container in the fridge or you may want to freeze them.

If you are looking for hints and tips on how to prepare and cook your fresh food you can browse the web or find some good information in cookery books. Monthly food magazines are also published which feature some great recipe ideas for you to try. Both types of fava are a good choice and you can be sure that a tasty and nutritious product has been added to your diet.
