Here Is Information About Horse Fence

By Jennifer Parker

A horse is a herbivorous animal which implies that it feeds on vegetation like grasses and leaves. Knowing this, when a person raises them on a farm, they must ensure they are confined. How to confine these big and powerful animals is quite a challenge. When a weak horse fence is used to confine horses, they can easily kick it out of their way or trample upon it.

Naturally, these animals have an instinct to jump, and that predisposes them to fence injuries than other animals. As such, it is important to make fences in a way that the animal cannot get injured trying to get over or through. This usually means that the spaces between posts or horizontal lines must be chosen carefully. Strength is one of the most important factors to consider too.

There are several different decisions that need to be made when one is trying to erect fencing fort horses. Usually, there are several decisions to be made, and compromise might be part of the process. However, no matter how much compromise is made, certain things cannot be changed or negotiated. An example of things that cannot be negotiated are the type of fencing to erect and what materials to use. Barbed wires and large wire mesh are some of the materials that can never be used no matter the situation because they are totally unsafe.

The reason why barbed wire is not recommended is that it can easily entrap panicked horses that try to run through or jump over them. Once entrapped, the spikes on the barbed wire can tear hide and cause other injuries that may kill the animal or end its career. When fencing is done using square mesh, the openings must not be over 3 square inches. Larger squares may trap the hooves of the animal and cause injury.

One has to put several factors into consideration when erecting a fence. The size of horses, budget, number, terrain, and maintenance costs and requirements are among the factors to be considered. A fence of 5feet to 4.5 feet is recommended. This ideal height ensures no incidents of escape or attempts.

The space allowed at the bottom side of the fencing must be considered well too. It is recommended to keep the space at 6-8 inches from the ground. Too much space may allow fowls to get out from the confinement. It is also possible for the head of the horse to get stuck while trying to stick it through the space to graze.

Previously, these fences were predominantly made using wood. The wood used has to be properly treated and maintained. Various wood treatment methods to be used are available today. To ensure strength, the posts must be driven sufficiently deep into the ground.

With the invention of better technologies, wood is losing to newer construction materials. For instance, PVC is becoming the material of choice for many horse keepers. PVC is preferred because it is very beautiful and very durable under the right weather conditions. PVC is also cheaper and easier and less costly to maintain.
