The Culinary Arts: Moist Vs. Dry Heat

By Katie Onson

To put it simply, the culinary arts is broad but it may be difficult to break up certain methods. If this is the case, you can rest easy knowing that they can be transitioned into either dry or moist heat cooking. Both of these are essential for the culinary arts and I believe that anyone who has knowledge in this field will be able to agree. With this in mind, in order to understand what it is that helps these methods to stand out, there are many details worth going over.

Dry heat cooking is a process that entails a couple of different methods, including sauteing and roasting. The similarities between these processes start at the fact that they do not require moisture in order for heat to be brought to the food. It must also be noted that these sorts of methods entail greater levels of heat as well, so extra care is probably a given. These are just a few of the most important aspects to consider if you want to make the most out of this endeavor.

Other types of methods - poaching and steaming come to mind - are ones which can be linked to moist heat cooking. This is where the transfer of moisture is brought into effect, unlike dry heat, and what this also means is that a lower temperature is going to be utilized. Keep in mind that there are certain liquids which can be brought into effect, steam and water being arguably the most important. Regardless, culinary specialists should focus on moist heat cooking just as well.

Of course, the debate over which method is better - moist heat or dry heat - is a topic where both answers are correct. For one, everyone has their own style of cooking, so the ability for a group to stick with a particular method can be something of a challenge. It's also important to note that each of these methods are essential, since food must be prepared in certain ways. Ultimately, as far as which method is better goes, it comes down to preference.

I do not think that anyone can argue with the fact that these culinary methods are essential, regardless of whether dry or moist heat is brought into effect. You want to make sure that you have a clear understanding of both categories and what exactly they entail. If you feel as though you are struggling with the learning process, do not get discouraged. Many people go to school for this reason and you can be certain that the details will sink in before long.
