How Shroom Burgers Are Inspiring Budget Cooking

By Frances Thomas

There is always something new coming out of the food industry and it can be difficult to keep up to speed with the latest trends. One that caught our eye recently is shroom burgers. Despite the illicit connotations, these have no hallucinatory effects and are simply a mushroom in the form of a burger. Whether it forms the bun or as a substitute for the meat inside, they are becoming increasingly popular.

Anyone who is on a strict budget will know that meat is very expensive. Sometimes it can be so expensive that it forces people to become vegetarians, even without the strict morals. Even if you buy the cheapest meat available, it will still be one of the most expensive items in your basket, so it is no wonder that people are looking for cheaper alternatives to their favourite meaty meals.

Vegetables are not always a particularly budget-friendly option either, but just because you are following a vegetarian recipe, does not mean that all you can eat is vegetables. However, it is a good idea to become used to knowing which vegetables are going to go off the quickest and which will last a long time, in addition to learning how to best preserve them.

One way to cut back on cost is to ensure that you waste as little food as possible. This is particularly the case with fruit and vegetables as they have a very short lifespan. Some of the cheaper stores for fruit and veg often offer produce with the shortest lifespan, so this is an important consideration. However, if you look in people's waste, it is often a mixture of food that has expired and food that people simply don't want anymore.

Planning ahead and going to a large or budget store each week or fortnight is a wonderful way to save money. They often have much better deals and cheaper produce than the smaller stores and you will be less likely to be tempted by the deals than if you go shopping every day for what you need. They often have more variety, allowing you to get creative with your recipes.

To save even more money, choose recipes that use a lot of lentils and beans. These are very cheap to buy and when combined with vegetables and the right herbs and spices they can be absolutely delicious. Sometimes it can take a few attempts to develop a recipe until the whole family likes it, but you will quickly get the hang of it.

Batch cooking is an easy technique to help your budget. Cook more than you need for one meal and freeze the rest for another day when you need it. This can be used whether you live alone or have a large family. Simply freeze it in individual servings or in a large pan, depending on when and how you need it. It also allows you to have easy access to a variety of meals so you don't get bored with eating the same thing all the time.

Budget cooking doesn't need to be vegetarian. However, excluding the most expensive item from the menu is often the easiest way to cut costs.
