The Sault Ste. Marie Area Is A Place Of Natural Wonders

By Frances Allen

When people are planning vacations, the upper peninsula of Michigan may not be high on their list. Instead of traveling to an amusement park or beach this year, consider booking a trip to the Sault Ste. Marie area. For those unfamiliar with the it, this is where the St. Mary's River separates Canada and the United States. It is where Lake Huron and Lake Superior are located, and it is a place of incredible beauty and diversity.

The Soo Locks attract thousands of visitors every year. This amazing engineering feat is one of the busiest in the country. Standing on the observation decks will give you a chance to see just how many huge freighters, tugs and barges pass in and out every day. Touring the waterway is an even better way to get a feeling for the amount of shipping activity that takes place here. You can choose from lighthouses cruises, luncheon and supper cruises, and fireworks cruises.

Another way to appreciate the beauty of this part of Michigan is by taking a scenic tour of Tahquamenon Falls. You should check out both the lower and upper falls. They are very different from one another, but each is breathtaking. These are the biggest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. You can hike the trails and might even want to stop for lunch at the brewery.

It is not unusual that this area has been home to a number of shipwrecks during its long history. There are plenty of opportunities for scuba divers to check out the remains of numerous ships resting at the bottom of both Lake Superior and Lake Huron. You might want to take a glass bottom boat tour instead of donning scuba gear. You can see what is left of one such ship located just below the surface of the lake.

Train tours seem like something travelers did generations ago, but they are available today and a great way to see the countryside from an unusual vantage point. The excursions will take you over trestles and wind their way down to the canyon's floor. This trip is especially popular during the last of September when the leaves are at their maximum color and brilliance.

After a long day of hiking and sightseeing, you might want to relax and try your luck at the Kewadin Casino. You could stay at the hotel here, which is affordably priced, while you hit the gaming tables or enjoy some of the top country entertainment that is regularly booked in the DreamMakers Theater. There is also a lounge that books excellent entertainers and has comedy and karaoke nights.

Even year round residents of this region never get enough of the Northern Lights. Although no one knows exactly when they will appear in the sky, though many try to time their trips to correspond with the most favorable conditions for the display. They usually make their appearance in the spring and fall, but not always. It depends completely on what is happening on the sun's surface.

This section of the country has so much natural beauty from the lakes to the mountains and everywhere in between. If you have the opportunity, you should really try and spend some time here.
